Beginners Embroidery Classes

Becky Hogg worked at the Royal School of Needlework for 9 years, teaching and on prestigious conservation & creative projects before setting herself up in her own studio in South East London. Her most recent work includes the embroidery of Kate Middleton's wedding dress, bespoke pilliows for wallpaper designers Beyond the Moon, limited edition jumpers for design duo Crispin Finn, and embroidery projects for "The Stitch Bible. A Comprehensive Guide To 225 Embroider Stitches & Techniques", available to buy at O.P.H. in September.

During the workshop you'll:
Be introduced to the different types of equipment used in embroidery
Learn a varietyof stitches invaluable to any embroidery project:
Outline stitches; Running stitch, stem stitch, split stitch, chain stitch, back stitch & couching stitch.
Filling stitches; Satin stitches, trellis stitch, long & short stitch, seeding stitch, raised stem band stitch
Practice different design transfer techniques.
What you'll need:
A pair of embroidery scissors
A pack of materials worth £10 is included in the course price.
The pack contains:
A range of coloured Anchor stranded cottons & Appleton crewel wools
No.7 & 9 crewel needles
Calico, tracing paper, acid free tissue paper & a reel of sewing thread.
Embroidery hoops with stands are provided.

Beginners Metal Thread Embroidery

During the Workshop you'll:
-Be introduced to the range of equipment used in metal thread embroudery.
-Practice different design transfer techniques
-Create a sampler that will include the following processes:
- Padding with felt and soft string to build up a surface on which to apply metal threads
- Couching
- Chipping
What you'll need to bring:
A pair of fine scissors that aren't your favourites (used to cut the metal threads)
A pack of materials worth £12 is included in the workshop fee.

Beginners Patchwork and Quilting

Suitable for beginners who can use a sewing machine.
This workshop will teach you all the skills you need to complete a mini quilt or quilted cushion cover.
You'll practice:
· choosing a selection of fabrics for patchwork
· using a rotary cutter
· piecing squares and strips
· putting together a top, wadding and backing ready for quilting
· quilting by machine using an even-feed foot
· making and applying bias binding to the edges
What you need to bring:
Rotary cutter
Quilting ruler with measurements in inches
A selection of light to medium weight woven natural fabrics, eg. cotton or linen. Left-over pieces from dressmaking or old clothing are great.
All other sewing tools, cutting mats, cotton sewing thread, wadding and backing fabric provided.
1 hour lunch break included.

Sewing & Recycling Club - Ages 8 - 11yrs

Have fun at this after school children's sewing class, learning how to use a sewing machine and designing new items from old textiles. You could make a needlebook from a shrunken wooly jumper for example, a pencil case from old jeans, a bag from an old shirt, or a skirt from a pillow case.
What you need to bring:
Any old or boring clothes of yours or belonging to your family that you thought might end on a scrap heap.
Lots of creative energy.
